5 Picture Books About Sewing
Many of our Sewing students love reading just as much as they love sewing! So today we’ve put together a list of our favourite children’s picture books about sewing. A Pattern for Pepper, by Julie Kraulis, is a story about a little girl named Pepper who visits the tailor to have a special dress made for her. She explores different fabrics in the shop and learns the names and history behind each pattern designed on the fabrics, until she finds the perfect one for her dress!
The Tsunami Quilt, by Anthony D. Fredericks, is a story about Kimo and his Grandfather and their yearly trip to visit a marble monument beside the ocean. It isn’t until Kimo’s Grandfather passes away that Kimo learns the story behind the monument. His father takes him to the Pacific Tsunami Museum to show him the quilt that was sewn by students to remember those lost in the Tsunami.
Something from Nothing, by Phoebe Gilman, is a story about a little boy named Joseph whose Grandfather makes him a blanket. As Joseph grows older, his blanket gets older too and his Grandfather transforms it into something new each time it gets worn out.
Nabeel’s New Pants- An Eid Tale, by Fawzia Gilani-Williams, is a story about a man named Nabeel who decides to buy presents for his family for Eid. He also buys himself a pair of pants, but when he asks his wife, mother, and daughter to hem the pants for him, they are all too busy. In the end he hems the pants on his own, but when he puts them on, on Eid day, he is in for a surprise!
Lady Hahn and Seven Friends, by Yumi Heo, is a story about a seamstress who has a sewing kit with 7 tools she uses everyday in her sewing. Her tools argue over which one is the most important for sewing. Lady Hahn argues that she herself is the most important because it is her hands that use the tools. In the end they realize they are all equally important.
