Setting up Your Sewing Area + FREE SEWING POSTER

Have you set up a dedicated sewing spot at home? It can be a small little corner in your bedroom or living room, or a larger dedicated space to fit your home and sewing needs. Since I teach sewing lessons to kids, I have a fairly large sewing space, but even with the smallest space I always recommend having a special spot where all your sewing supplies and machines are set up and ready to go. This way you aren’t stuck lugging everything out from a closet every time creativity strikes. Today I’d like to share a few of my favourite things for keeping everything organized, along with a fun freebie to hang up your sewing area.

  1. Drawers

I like to stay organized by using drawers. Small drawers, large drawers. They are perfect for keeping everything contained and organized in their own designated spots. From trims, ribbons, threads, sewing machine tools and attachments, needles and more.

2. Baskets

Baskets are great for storing folded pieces of fabric. Oftentimes you will see people store fabric on shelves, but when working with kids, I have noticed that an even better method is to first store them in baskets before placing them on the shelves. This allows you to sort your fabrics by type or colour and also makes it easy to bring down from the shelf and access at a lower level for kids.

3. Decorative Containers

If you love thrift shopping like I do, and are always in search of new treasures, then the next time you are at a second hand store, keep an eye out for fun decorative containers. These are great for storing those small sewing supplies such as buttons.

What’s next?

Once your space is all organized, then comes the fun part! Make it uniquely your own by painting wooden storage containers if you have them, or hanging up fun wall art above your machine.

I’ve illustrated a fun sewing poster just for you and I hope that you enjoy hanging it up in your sewing area at home. I have included a colour version as well as a black and white one in case you'd like to colour one yourself! Get this fun freebie by signing up for my newsletter below.
